    Hi Jeff, beautiful stuff. The opening had a very Irish landscape soundtrack vibe going on. Then I remembered why, check out the intro to the original Thin Lizzy recording of Whiskey in the Jar from the mid 1970’s, very similar feel/approach, apart from the fact that it’s in a minor key. Thanks for that, top class. The Irishman.

    I have been a gigging bassist for the last 25 years or so. I also love to try to come up with song ideas at home on the guitar. Always looking for ways to increase my creativity and musicality. Jeff's guitar lessons are amongst the best that I have come across online that move me closer to that end. The triad bundle is amazing! So many techniques for expanding your musical ideas up and down the fret board. The key word is musical. All of the lessons are geared towards expanding musicality. Thanks Jeff! Must have been lots of work creating all these various lessons that dovetail into one another so effectively.

    Very nice, thanks! This chimes so much with me at the moment as I think that I've spent far too much time at the other end of the scale if you forgive the pun. Too many hours playing solo, practicing technique. Playing with a nice tone against a background like this seems such a refreshing alternative approach

    AI will cancel character in music, will render everything flat. why are you helping that using it? just get a pencil and write the notes on a piece of paper. things cannot grow without our consent

    • @JeffMcErlain

      I’m helping people practice effectively. What does using a tool to help randomize 12 tones for the use of practicing notes names on the fingerboard have to do with AI musical compositions? In this case it’s the equivalent of a calculator vs an abacus. 🧮 A tool.

    you spoke a bit about knowing what your right hand is doing. I have been fortunate that I have been able to do that and not worry about it while I struggle with my left. LOL. But just watching this video it is amazing how little effort or movement there seems to be coming from your right hand while the music is incredible.

  • @MrMinddoctor
    @MrMinddoctor 3 дні тому

    Jeff, can I ask you a theory question? I was inspired by this last night and decided that rather than just learn 7ths it made more sense to me to learn 13ths and just ditch some notes for 11th's, 9th's and 7th's respectively to get the others. so far so good. I've been making charts long hand and my brain seems to have gone fizzy. If my charts are right then a G13 has exactly the same notes in it as a C major scale. Respectively A13 has all the notes of a D major scale so on an so forth. This means that if one ignores the relationship between the G and B string, every root note as a 13th will have all the notes of the major scale of the note directly to it's right. so E13 will have all the notes of the A major scale... Am I missing something here? Are my charts wrong? It seems too easy.... I haven't gone into minors or flat 5ths or anything else so far, therefore I haven't found any other weird relationships, it seems to me I may have gone wrong somewhere, can you confirm my thinking or do I need to go back to my charts?

    • @JeffMcErlain
      @JeffMcErlain 2 дні тому

      Ha! You are not wrong! For example G7 is GBDF. A is the 9, C is the 11, and E is the 13. So we can see that ACE as an upper structure triad spelling Am. As you noticed she put all of those notes in alphabetical order you get GABCEDFG. C major or G mixolydian if you hear it on the G7. These upper structure triads are present in every chord of the scale. Good work!!

    • @MrMinddoctor
      @MrMinddoctor 2 дні тому

      @@JeffMcErlain That's cool thank you. Does that mean that if we were jammin a blues prog and as I hit the G7 you could use the ACE for soloing over it without clashing? I was thinking it might be a complimentary association? I'm not sure of the right terminology.

    I agree learning all the notes is more important than memorising scales. Like most people I get bored easily & find memorising things tedious. So the only way I achieved it was by learning to read music, which is fun once you start, killing 2 birds with one stone.

    I loved your explenation of "I Play By Feel" and then using the myth that all people think Jimi played "By Feel" and didn't know anything about music. Just because you can't read and write music at that level, doesn't mean you are not using musical concepts My friend has been preaching this crap on me for years. I have a degree in music, I know enough theory that I don't have to use it. My friend is so stubborn, he always says I play by feel, but its horrible and I can't follow him, I can't phrase, I am constantly playing defensively and you can't improv over it because he is literraly making it up. Thats what he says, I just make it up, So I need telepathy to play with him. I never had to use my brain so much while trying to make something sound musical . I tell him, I don't by feel, I play with feel, but I need something to feel first, wether it is a pocket, a groove, an idea, something to improv over. Improvising is not making something up, It is using ingredients to elaborate with. Anyway, thanks for your validation that I am not crazy.

    Most of the people I've known who take the "I don't want to know anything about how music works, so don't try to teach me any of it or try to show me anything about it because I don't want to learn it because I'll lose all my soul and I won't have any feeling if I know what I'm doing" attitude are the same ones who will stubbornly insist on playing things that don't work or sound horrible, and then authoritatively state in no uncertain terms: "well, that's just the way I play it." These are usually the same ones who either play so softly so as not to be heard at all, or they're hitting hard enough to break all of the strings or tear the neck off of the guitar.

      @@JeffMcErlain I should mention that every story I've ever heard about Stevie Ray said that he was a gorilla when it came to how hard he played, but he had control over it and he chose his strings accordingly, so he sounded great. When you play like him with .009's it usually doesn't work too well. I've made the mistake of letting those types play my instruments, and I usually end up replacing at least one string. They usually don't sound like anything close to SRV. Steve Martin had a great line: "I remember my first beer"
